Summary: Prologue of sorts to “A Modest Proposal” but can stand alone. Valentine fic for [livejournal.com profile] gin200168 who requested Jack/Nathan/Ali, inspired by the following song lyrics:

“Well I am imagining
A dark lit place
Or your place or my place

Well I’m not paralyzed
But, I seem to be struck by you
I want to make you move
Because you’re standing still
If your body matches
What your eyes can do
You’ll probably move right through
Me on my way to you”

It had been two days since the big announcement that Allison had said yes, and Nathan was still fielding the occasional congratulation as he entered Café Diem to meet Allison for dinner. He paused for a moment, watching Jack and Zoë work on a physics problem, which involved a holographic model of an atom he suspected Henry had somehow provided Zoe. Henry always provided some sort of kinesthetic model for his students, Nathan recalled fondly. He hid a smile as Zoë let Jack flick one of the electrons into motion, the simulation of electron cloud zooming into life, making both of them laugh.

The smiling blue eyes met his for a moment, still open and delighted, and Nathan watched the barriers slam up, Jack’s eyes only flickering with pain for a moment before he deliberately turned his back on Nathan and tried to reach to poke again, getting his hand smacked by Zoë, who was carefully notating what she’d just seen. The work seemed advanced for the level of physics he’d last heard Zoë was at, and Nathan made a mental note to check that she was on the invite list for higher level classes. He suspected a bored Zoë, like a bored Jack, was dangerous.

Nathan continued to watch as he slid into a chair slightly inside the door, struck by the frozen smile and too bright laugh Jack was now projecting for his daughter. Zoë set her pen down, picking up the coffee pot and pouring the sheriff a refill, perceptively noting the shift in her father’s mood.

Allison entered, scanning quickly for Nathan but not spotting him in the corner table behind her, so she crossed to the counter, laughing when Jack let her start the electrons in motion on Zoë’s model. “Very clever,” she praised Zoë loud enough for Nathan to overhear. He didn’t hear Jack’s reply, but he imagined it was self congratulatory or silly as the sheriff pretended to shine his nails on his uniform, getting a wide grin from Allison and a little dig back, that had Jack pretending to wince before nodding his head over to Nathan, letting Allison know he was there.

“Hey,” Allison greeted him, giving him a quick kiss before sitting down, her eyes still sparkling with laughter. “Did you see Zoë’s model? It reminds me of something Henry would cook up.”

Nathan lifted an eyebrow, impressed. “I assumed it was one of Henry’s,” he admitted, steepling his fingers thoughtfully. “What’s her physics track at Tesla?”

“High, but not advanced,” Allison replied, frowning at Nathan. “What are you thinking?”

“I’d never admit it to Carter, but we could use more students with the sort of common sense and brains she has,” Nathan said. “I can’t stand working with the too brilliant to know how to tie their own shoes interns Tesla sends us anymore.”

“First of all, you never work with them, you make a point of avoiding them,” Allison remarked dryly. “And second, I think you’re getting spoiled by working with Carter all the time.”

Nathan turned a withering look on her, completely baffled by the suggestion. “Carter may not be a rocket scientist, but his common sense compliments your way of thinking very well,” Allison continued, smiling at Vince when he approached the table. “Pasta Olgio with shrimp and asparagus,” Allison ordered, and Nathan indicated the same, still looking at Allison curiously.

“Look, without Henry to be the bridge between the two of you in problem solving, you both may have to give a little more, but I wouldn’t trust anyone more to solve the big problems in this town than the two of you. Like when Fargo was trapped in the MACAA,” Allison concluded, shrugging. “Anyway, what happened at your meeting with Thorne?”

Nathan was glad for the shift in topic, glad for something lighter to discuss so he could continue to brood in some corner of his mind. Allison had no idea how well he and Jack could work together, he mused. Like the MACAA.

”Admit it, that was sort of fun yesterday,” Jack’s voice called down the dock after him. They’d agreed earlier to meet here, at a cabin GD kept for scientists to use. Nathan turned back from his contemplation of the ripples in the water, arching an eyebrow.

“The part where I lost my job or the part where Fargo almost died?” he replied wryly. He hadn’t decided yet if he wanted to accept Allison’s offer of a job, which was part of the reason he’d texted Jack with an emergency code to meet him here.

“The working together part,” Jack supplied, reaching the end of the dock. “So what’s the emergency? I should warn you, you’re totally blowing my one per week quota.”

“Allison offered me a job at GD,” Nathan said neutrally, skipping a rock out over the surface of the water.

“Annoying, yes, emergency, no,” Jack remarked dryly. He sighed, tucking his hands in his pockets and rocking on his heels for a moment. “You probably should stay. I don’t have any patience for training a new scientist.”

Nathan huffed, folding his arms as he looked at Jack, understanding what the sheriff wasn’t saying. “That’s not why I brought you to a cabin in the middle of the woods,” he remarked suddenly, letting his eyes rake over Jack’s lean body. “All that running around yesterday, adrenaline, excitement…” he let his voice trail off suggestively, stepping closer, into Jack’s personal space.

“Thought we agreed that was a one time… well, one night, thing,” Jack replied a little coolly. “Are we in need of a new… arrangement?” His looked up from under his eyelashes, and Nathan got the impression Jack just might be playing with him.

“Maybe,” Nathan admitted, shrugging. “After yesterday, I wanted to find you and screw you through a surface, and it didn’t necessarily need to be a horizontal one.” Jack’s eyes were widening, pupils dilated, so Nathan knew his words were having an effect. “Jerked off, but it didn’t help.”

“So, make it an occasional thing, just when one of us needs to blow off pressure or the like?” Jack suggested, stepping a little closer. “But still casual.”

“Yeah,” Nathan agreed, jerking his head and starting down the dock in step with Jack. He tried to think of something else to say, but his tongue was heavy with suggestions of what he wanted to do to Jack, not anything rational. He held open the cabin door for Jack, surprised when the sheriff managed to pin him against the door a moment later, roughly kissing him.

“Still want to fuck me?” Jack asked in a growl, nipping at Nathan’s lower lip.

“Yes,” Nathan hissed, bucking his hips up into Jack’s, and the sheriff pushed him roughly back against the door again.

“Then you’ll have to take me,” Jack replied, and Nathan began wrestling back, determined to claim the upper hand. He switched strategies, aiming for stripping the other man instead, and Jack followed suit, both shedding clothes quickly. Something ripped, his dress shirt, Nathan thought, but couldn’t be bothered to check as he sealed his mouth to Jack’s again, waiting till Jack was shucking his pants and shoving him, sending them both crashing to the floor, Nathan on top. He was bucking into Jack, the sheriff meeting his thrusts eagerly, kissing and nipping, hands gripping anything they could reach as they wrestled, fast and messy.

“Wait, wait,” Jack managed to pant, tugging on Nathan’s curls in order to get his attention. “Bed, want you in me,” he informed Nathan, making a muffled noise of surprise when Nathan picked him up and dropped him to the mattress, straddling him and kissing him once more, Nathan not checking his desire as he plundered Jack’s mouth.

“Stay put,” Nathan demanded, climbing up and finding his hastily discarded pants and the lube and condoms he’d brought with him. He turned back, and Jack grabbed on, pulling him down to the mattress and pinning him down.

“I don’t take orders from you,” Jack reminded him, mouth hot on Nathan’s throat. “I don’t work for you, I don’t listen to you, and I’m probably one of three or four people in town you don’t control in one way or another. And I think that’s what gets you off.”

Nathan groaned, but shook his head, even though his cock had gone rock hard, knowing Jack was right.

“Nathan?”

He looked over, realizing the memory had claimed enough of his attention to make him drift off. “Did I exhaust you last night?” Allison teased him, cupping her hand over his cheek.

“Maybe,” he agreed, libido ridiculously cranked between the memory of Jack and Allison’s teasing look. “Guess I should head home and go to bed,” he suggested, grinning at Allison wickedly.

Allison smirked. “Meet you at home?” she asked, pulling her keys out.

“I need to tell Fargo something,” Nathan told her, nodding at the young man. “I’ll be a few minutes behind you.”

“Good,” Allison replied teasingly. “Gives me time to change into something I think will drive you wild.”

Nathan watched her leave, turning back to the counter, where Jack was idly flicking the electron model, waiting for Zoë to get off work. He crossed over to the bar, setting the electrons in motion to announce his presence. “Carter,” he said softly, using a tone of voice he knew the other man would recognize. The stiffening of Jack’s shoulders told him that he was about as far from being in the other man’s good graces as was possible without involving Jack’s sidearm. “I’m sorry if I hurt you.”

“Don’t know what you’re talking about, Dr. Stark.” Jack put a hard edge on the title. “Congratulations on the wedding, by the way. But if you were wondering,” his voice dropped to a low undertone, so only Nathan could hear it. “We’re done. You’re getting married, and I don’t have affairs. Won’t cross that line. Probably should have sent you away that first time we were at the cabin,” he added in a grumble, rising and turning the electron model off, preparing to leave.

“But not after SARAH’s lockdown?” Nathan observed quietly, thinking back to their first night together. Jack’s shoulders tightened even further, but he didn’t reply as he headed over to Zoë. Nathan paused, considering his next move. He had the information he came for, now certain Jack still cared and probably didn’t regret a minute of their time together.

“Won’t have an affair,” Nathan cataloged to himself as he stepped out of Café Diem, images chasing through his brain. Allison lying underneath him, Jack slowly sliding into him, her soft sighs, his throaty groans, the proposal, Allison’s delight, Jack’s pain filled eyes…

One final image snapped into place, Allison’s open and genuine laughter when she stood with Jack and Zoë that evening. It was so unbelievably perfect that he froze for a moment, unable to believe he hadn’t thought up such a simple solution before. He made a mental note to plant a few ideas in Allison’s head, and then started focusing on Jack again as he walked to his car. He knew Allison’s kinks and desires well enough to know she was an easier sell on this idea than Jack.

*-*

The next time Allison gave him a hard time about working together with Jack was that weekend while he helped her with yard work, and he teasingly said, “I don’t think you want to see Carter and I work together, you want to see us play together.”

Allison’s eyes glazed for a moment, and then she flushed when she became aware of Nathan’s all too knowing eyes on her. “Okay, so I think that would be hot,” she admitted with a scowl, brushing some grass clippings off her face as she resumed raking the mulch. “Not that he’d go for it, nor would you, so you can just stop teasing me about it.”

“Hmm, I don’t know,” Nathan paused, leaning on his rake, giving Allison a playful glance. “He’d probably like being at your mercy. What would you make the two of us do, anyway?”

Allison added a little extra sway to her hips as she moved closer to Nathan, giving him a smug look, apparently thinking he was playing chicken. “Hmm, you’d be competitive if I had the two of you together, probably each trying to get the upper hand while I watched. And I’d want to see him win,” she continued, slinking in, sliding a hand down Nathan’s chest.

“Really?” Nathan remarked, swallowing a little as the idea had him growing hard. “Why?”

“You may forget just how dangerous the marshal in Jack can be, but I bet he could take you if he wanted to, have you on your knees,” Allison told him, bringing her hands up to cup his face, using just the slightest pressure to drop him to his knees. “Not like I can with just a little smile or flirting,” she observed, gasping as Nathan slid his hands under her old T-shirt, rough thumbs teasing her nipples through her bra. “Actually bring you to your knees.”

“And?” Nathan asked, grinning as he leaned forward, kissing the soft skin of her abdomen, enjoying the game.

“And you wouldn’t settle for that, he’d have to force you down completely,” Allison continued, her hands actually a little rough as she pushed him back onto the pile of grass and leaves, straddling him before he realized that she was undoing his shirt, nails scraping over his chest deliberately. “And when he did this,” she leaned down, teeth closing on his earlobe, making him groan and relax into her touch, “You’d react just like that.” Allison sounded far too pleased with herself as she brought her lips up to kiss him deeply, a little desperation in her movements. She had his jeans undone in the next moment, and Nathan could only spare a moment’s gratitude that Allison had a tall fence and no neighbors for several hundred yards as he moaned.

“You like this,” Allison observed, eyes sparkling. “The idea of him forcing you down, teasing you till you’re,” she gripped his erection to emphasize her words, “hard enough to think about trying to turn the tables. But you won’t,” she gasped, even as she let him tug off her shirt. He leaned up and sucked at her breast through the soft cloth of her bra, using his teeth to tease her, surprised when she forced him back down, grinning. “You’re not in control,” she reminded him, returning the favor and biting at his nipples teasingly. “Jack is, and I am,” she continued, and Nathan shuddered.

Allison shimmied out of her pants, barely giving Nathan time to think before she was straddling him again, sinking onto his cock. “But he’d reward you, bottom from the top this way, because he knows the same thing I do,” Allison murmured. “You let him win.”

Nathan groaned, falling into rhythm with Allison’s movement, unable to slow himself, and she certainly didn’t try to slow him. She linked her fingers with his, making sure she held onto the control. “And I’d sit back, and watch him ride you, let him have his way with you,” she informed him breathlessly before she cried out softly, muscles clenching around him in a familiar way.

“Allie,” he groaned, hips moving faster, and she shook her head.

“Go on, call out his name,” she murmured. He started to object, and her hands rose to close his eyes, sinking him into the fantasy. “He’s the one pushing you over the edge, and I want to see if you can handle that.”

Nathan managed a faint noise of protest, but Allison kept up her relentless rhythm, sounding breathless. “You started this, my fantasy, and I want you to finish it. Tell me what you see.”

“He… Jack grabs arms, holds onto control even though trying to push me faster, ungh,” Nathan gasped as Allison wrapped her hands around his forearms exactly like he was imagining. “Competitive, don’t want to be first to come, try to drive each other crazy first.”

“Sounds about right,” Allison agreed in a low purr, and Nathan held onto his control for a moment longer, forcing the image of Jack, writhing sensuously under him in the small cabin along the lake, to the top of his mind, and he was dimly aware of crying out Jack’s name as he came. Allison stroked his hair gently, a small smile on her face as he slowly opened his eyes to look up at her. “Got something to tell me?” she asked softly, eyes open and amused.

“Allie,” he started, floundering almost instantly.

“Okay, let me try,” she said, rolling her eyes good-naturedly. “Did you at least kiss him before you grappled each other into bed and felt ridiculously guilty afterwards?”

“Yeah,” Nathan admitted, reaching up to slowly trace her lower lip. “How’d you know?”

“He hasn’t been aiming those kicked puppy looks at me,” Allison replied, and Nathan gave her a skeptical look. “Okay, not just at me. And the tension between you never resolved in coming to blows, so there had to be another way you ended up with some of those moments where you were a smirk away from flirting with each other.”

“We didn’t…” Nathan started to object automatically, then sighed. “Yeah, guess we did.”

“Come on,” Allison tugged him up, carefully redressing. Nathan re-buttoned his jeans, but left his shirt off as they finished dumping the mulch into a trash bag. “Shower, then I’ll have you tell me a play by play of you and Jack, and maybe by the time you’re done talking, we’ll be ready for another round.”

“Love the way you think,” Nathan murmured, leaning in to kiss Allison. “Love you.”

“Love you too,” she replied, pulling him back in to deepen the kiss. “So you think we could ever really do that?”

“Don’t know,” he admitted, shrugging. “Don’t think so. He has a hang up about marriage and affairs, won’t cross that line.”

“Hmm,” was all Allison murmured in reply, and Nathan began plotting phase 2 of his plan—getting Jack on board.
