Title: Want U 2 B Mine

Pairing: Jack/Nathan

Rating: PG

Word Count: 1000

A/N: The Valentine’s request was for my OTP and candy hearts, as a reciprocal gift (being my OTP makes it a gift back to me!) Happy Valentine’s Day and thanks, Jenn!

Summary: Mysterious gifts drive Nathan crazy on a day that already has him on edge.

“Fargo!” Nathan glared around him. Something, or someone more likely, had spewed glitter and doilies all over the Global lobby. Fargo scrambled up, looking pale. “I thought I said none of this…” he gestured around, failing to come up with a word for the disgusting decorations. “…stuff, this year,” he concluded, his glare intensifying.

“Yes, sir,” Fargo agreed frantically, his head almost bobbling off his shoulders from his enthusiasm. “But some of the employees just felt that…”

Nathan held up a hand, inspecting Fargo. “You got a Valentine, didn’t you?” he guessed. Fargo squeaked as he nodded, and Nathan sighed. “Just make sure it doesn’t get in my office,” he said, shaking his head in disgust. “Stupidest excuse for a holiday ever,” he grumbled. He was aware at the back of his mind that some of his hostility was from being alone. The latest object of his affection, being completely oblivious, would simply blink his wide blue eyes ignorantly if Nathan brought the man a valentine, no matter how many hints he had dropped over the past couple of months.

He dropped his briefcase and reached to turn on his computer. His hand froze, midair, seeing a cluster of four candy hearts sitting just under the power switch. They all read, “be mine!” He took a deep breath, and then yelled, “Fargo!”

Fargo scrambled around the doorframe, still chewing on a chocolate. “Who’s been in my office?” he demanded, scooping up the hearts and waving them under Fargo’s nose.

“Someone who wants to be your Valentine?” Fargo guessed, then backpedaled, seeing the dark look on his boss’s face. “Uh, I haven’t seen anyone, Dr. Stark.”

Nathan sighed, dropping the candies into his pocket, and grabbing a lab report. “Go, I have work to do,” he snarled, sitting down and muttering to himself about Hallmark and sugar buzzes.

Mid afternoon, Henry called Nathan down to his lab, where Nathan stayed a minimal amount of time, finding Henry to have been bit by the Valentine decorating bug as well. He made it back to his thankfully bare lab, only to stop, seeing eight candy hearts now across his desk. Looking closer, he saw that they all read, “kiss me”.

“Fargo!” he snapped, but saw his assistant had vanished. “What is it about Valentine’s that reduces this town to morons?” he asked, not expecting an answer.

“Hopeless romantics?” he heard a familiar voice guess, and he turned to see Jack striding into his office. The sheriff grinned at him, his blue eyes twinkling. “What’s the matter, don’t buy into the Hallmark hype?”

“No,” Nathan growled. “And now my assistant has run off for a mid day quickie.”

“There’s an image I didn’t need,” Jack shuddered, crossing to lounge on Nathan’s desk. “Whatcha got?” he asked, nodding toward Nathan’s clenched fist when the scientist looked at him blankly.

“Oh, someone’s idea of a joke,” Nathan replied darkly, holding out the hearts for Jack to see. He watched closely, a little piece of him hoping the other man was behind the hearts.

“They all say the same thing,” Jack observed, picking one up and sliding into his mouth. Nathan watched, transfixed as Jack licked his lips to catch the last taste of sugar. “Mm, banana,” Jack grinned, but it faded a little as he looked up at Nathan. “Maybe it’s not a joke,” he offered, shrugging. “It’s not hard to believe someone would want you to kiss them.”

“They left some this morning too,” Nathan reached into his pocket and pulled out the four hearts.

Jack raised an eyebrow, grinning. “Wow, serious. Someone wants you to be theirs.”

“Are you done mocking?” Nathan asked, sighing. The candies clearly weren’t from Jack. He was just as ignorant of Nathan’s feelings as he had been for months.

“Almost,” Jack replied impishly, taking another candy marked ‘kiss me’. He popped it in his mouth, sucking on it. “Ever notice how people never act on what these things tell them?”

“So?” Nathan asked, trying to focus on something other than the tiny candy currently melting on Jack’s tongue.

“So if I steal your candy, I ought to at least pay you back,” Jack commented. Nathan’s eyes flickered up, noticing that Jack’s pupils were larger than normal, focused intently on him. He froze, unable to move as Jack leaned in and kissed him gently, leaving the taste of banana candy heart lingering on his lips. By the time Nathan got his brain working again, Jack had backed away, offering up an apologetic grin. “Sorry,” Jack muttered, moving toward the door, but Nathan put out an arm to bar his path, letting his hand curl around the other man’s waist.

“You stole two ‘kiss’ candies,” Nathan observed quietly, a smile creeping up on his face. “And we can’t be letting the sheriff off without replaying me in full, now can we?”

Jack looked surprised, but moved in, leaning up to kiss Nathan again. This time Nathan wound his fingers into Jack’s uniform to pull him closer, opening his mouth and deepening the kiss. When they broke apart, Jack’s eyes were full of questions.

“I’ve got ten more candies and am ready to get out of here,” Nathan told him, keeping his hands loosely on Jack’s waist. “If you’re interested in being mine.”

“Actually,” Jack reached in his pocket, pulling out two tiny hearts and handing them over to Nathan.

Nathan accepted them, reading, ‘I love u.’ “Happy Valentine’s Day, Nathan,” Jack said, his voice rough with emotion. “I’m not quite as dumb as you think,” he added, his thumb brushing over Nathan’s lower lip.

“So I noticed,” Nathan chuckled, leaning in to kiss Jack. “Can I take you home now before we find out who Fargo’s valentine is?”

“Ha, don’t you know anything about subterfuge? Always eliminate the guard dog,” Jack replied, his smile mischievous. Nathan’s eyes widened as he caught on, and he kissed Jack fiercely.

“Let’s get you home before he catches on,” Nathan decided, pulling Jack after him.
