Title: Lantern for the Lost: Prologue
Pairing: Jack/Nathan (small side bits with Jo/Zane and Vince/Paul)
Rating: This part-- PG13 for disturbing images. Overall NC-17
Word Count: ~300
Disclaimer: If they were mine, it wouldn’t have happened! But since they aren’t, I’m just borrowing them to play with.
Warnings: Spoilers for 304: I Do Over, AU off 304, cannon character death-ish, angst, non-corporeal sex like stuff, some graphic imagery.
A/N: Yes, many part long fic, roughly 40K overall- new chaps every Tuesday, before anyone can ask when the update will be!
Summary: He’s displaced in time and it just figures that the only person he can even slightly reach doesn’t have anything resembling the knowledge to help him.
It took Nathan a moment to process where he was because everything had changed before his eyes. GD scientists filled the room, taking measurements, while Carter looked on, his face worn and pale, hands deep in his pockets, signs of barely concealed, deep worry. Nathan blinked, aware for one brief moment that the mouths on the two women nearest him were moving, talking to Carter, but Nathan couldn’t hear any sound. “What happened?” he tried to demand, but silence remained.
He began to panic, when everything came to a halt when he realized that no one was looking at him. “Hello?” he asked, or thought he did. No sound. The time loop had ended, but apparently left him deaf, Nathan determined, raising his hand to wave at the scientists, attract some attention.
Two things struck him in rapid succession. The first was that his hand passed directly through Carter’s body. He would have gaped in amazement at that alone, but more startling was noticing that his hand and forearm hovered, midair, with nothing attached. No body.
Nathan stared for a long moment as his partially formed pinky finger, rematerializing an atom at a time, slowly taking shape before his eyes. His mind filled with a low roaring with the rush of impossibility. Half horrified, he raised the floating hand to his eyes, able to feel his eyelashes brush fingertips with a small ripple of relief. He moved his hands back along his temple, suddenly encountering empty air.
No ears. No hearing, because he had no ears. No corporeal form. His mind was now screaming in agony as he looked up at a reflective surface, spotting the macabre image of partially formed veins, brains, only his eyes and his hands and forearms resembling anything whole. One last image of his heart, half formed and pumping empty air, filled his vision just before he blacked out.
